If one-and-a-half woodchucks can chuck one-and-a-third cords of wood in one-and-a-fourth hours, how many cords of wood can one woodchuck chuck in one hour?

Solution 1 by Mark Veneklase, Grand Rapids Catholic
Central High School
The rate at which the
woodchucks
are chucking is
.
Assuming that one woodchuck chucks wood at a proportionally altered rate, that
rate will be simply
or
cords of wood
per hour.
Solution 2 by Joe Gilsenan, De La Salle Collegiate
High School
Divide the 1 1/2 woodchucks by 3; then 1 1/2+ 1/2 +1/2 +1/2 woodchucks. Similarly,
divide the 1 1/3 cords of wood by 3; then 1 1/3 = 4/9 =4/9 =4/9 cords of wood.
Then 1/2 of a woodchuck can chuck 4/9 cords of wood in 1 1/4 hours. That means
that 1 woodchuck can chuck 8/9 cords in 1 1/4 hours. If you multiply 1 1/4 by
1/5, it equals 1/4hour, and if you multiply 8/9 by 1/5, you get 8/45 cords.
That means that one woodchuck can chuck 8/45 cords in 1/4 hour. Therefore, one
woodchuck can chuck 8/45*4 = 32/45 cords of wood in one hour.
